Ozone Therapy: Uses, Benefits, and Side Effects

Muscle weakness, chronic pain, and stubborn joint problems affect millions of people. Through my years of practice at Iowa Wellness Center, I've watched patients transform their health using a treatment that might surprise you: ozone therapy. This advanced approach to regenerative medicine has helped countless individuals recover from conditions that traditional treatments couldn't resolve.

What is Ozone Therapy? A Clinical Perspective

During my daily practice, patients breathe regular oxygen (O2). Ozone therapy uses O3, a form of oxygen with three molecules instead of two. This molecular difference creates approximately ten times more therapeutic potential than standard oxygen.

I've administered thousands of ozone treatments over the past eight years. The process involves introducing medical-grade ozone into the bloodstream, where it supports healing, fights infections, and enhances overall wellness. What once seemed experimental has become a cornerstone of modern regenerative medicine.

The Difference Between Oxygen and Ozone

Think of regular oxygen as standard fuel for your body's cells. Ozone acts like premium fuel, giving your healing systems a significant boost. Your cells rely on oxygen to create energy and repair damage. When I introduce ozone during treatment, patients receive enhanced oxygen that supercharges these natural processes.

That extra oxygen molecule makes all the difference. As ozone enters the bloodstream, it breaks down and releases active oxygen. I've watched this transformation happen hundreds of times. The blood absorbs this oxygen readily, carrying it throughout the body to areas needing repair most urgently.

How Blood Responds to Ozone Treatment

One of the most striking aspects of administering ozone therapy involves watching the blood transformation. When I draw blood for treatment, it appears as a dark reddish color. After mixing with ozone, that same blood becomes bright, vibrant red. This visual change represents heavy oxygenation, and I explain to patients that this supercharged blood will circulate through their system, seeking out problem areas and initiating healing.

Types of Ozone Therapy We Use at Our Clinic

Over the years, I've developed specific protocols for different treatment approaches. Each serves particular needs based on patient conditions and wellness goals.

Low-Dose Ozone IV Therapy

Low-dose treatment provides an excellent introduction to ozone therapy. During this procedure, I draw approximately 60 milliliters of blood into a specialized bag. After mixing with medical-grade ozone, the transformation happens immediately. The blood shifts from darker coloring to brilliant, bright red.

I then slowly reintroduce this oxygenated blood through an IV drip. The entire process takes 20 to 30 minutes. Patients sit comfortably throughout the session, often reading or resting. This straightforward approach works well for those new to ozone therapy.

High-Dose Ozone (EBOO Therapy)

EBOO stands for Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation. If low-dose therapy provides a targeted boost, EBOO delivers a full system upgrade. This approach treats approximately two liters of blood during a single session, equivalent to ten low-dose treatments combined.

Many patients ask how treating two liters of blood works without removing it all at once. I use sophisticated equipment similar to dialysis with a closed-loop system. An IV in one arm continuously draws blood, passes it through a chamber where it gets thinned and cleaned, introduces ozone to a larger surface area, runs it through UV light for antibacterial benefits, then returns it through an IV in the other arm.

This continuous circulation means patients never lose their blood volume. The procedure takes 90 minutes to two hours. Interestingly, many patients report feeling energized halfway through the session.

Alternative Administration Methods I've Used

Beyond IV therapy, I've successfully used several other administration methods:

Ozonated Water: Some patients ozonate their drinking water at home. This works well for digestive system or mouth-related issues.

Ear Insufflation: For headaches, chronic sinus problems, or head-related conditions, I gently introduce ozone through the ears. One recent case involved a patient with persistent tongue sores. I had them use ozonated water to swish and drink, which cleared the condition quickly.

Topical Applications: For stubborn wounds, diabetic ulcers, or non-healing infections, I apply ozone directly to affected areas using a sealed bag system. Many diabetic patients visit our clinic with sores that won't heal. Using ozone in a bag placed over their hand or foot, we've successfully healed wounds that resisted conventional treatment.

Rectal Insufflation: While available, we don't use this method at our clinic. IV administration provides better results.

IV administration delivers the best absorption rate because ozone goes directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system where much would break down.

How Ozone Therapy Works: My Clinical Observations

Understanding the mechanism helps explain why ozone addresses such diverse conditions.

The Low-Dose Treatment Process

Once I draw blood and mix it with ozone, it becomes saturated with oxygen. As this supercharged blood re-enters circulation, it travels to every organ, tissue, and cell.

The fascinating part? Your body intelligently directs this oxygenated blood toward areas experiencing the most stress, inflammation, or damage. It's like having an internal GPS guiding healing power exactly where needed most.

The EBOO Procedure Details

The EBOO system takes this concept further. As blood passes through the treatment chamber, several things happen simultaneously. First, the blood thins slightly, helping it absorb more ozone. Patients actually see waste products, toxins, and debris collecting in a separate container. This visible proof shows blood cleaning happening in real-time.

I then introduce ozone to this prepared blood over a much larger surface area than in low-dose therapy. UV light treatment adds antimicrobial and antiviral protection before the purified, oxygenated blood returns to the body.

Cellular Healing and Energy Production

Remember the Krebs cycle from biology? That's how cells convert nutrients and oxygen into usable energy. When cells don't receive adequate oxygen, energy production slows and cellular repair suffers.

Ozone therapy floods the system with oxygen cells need to accelerate energy production. This allows damaged cells to repair themselves, inflamed tissues to calm down, and the immune system to function at peak efficiency. I explain this to every patient because understanding the mechanism builds confidence in the treatment.

Health Benefits I've Observed Through Years of Practice

The range of benefits I've witnessed remains impressive after eight years of administering treatments.

Immune System Support

Your immune system requires oxygen to function properly. White blood cells use oxygen to destroy pathogens and abnormal cells. By dramatically increasing oxygen availability, ozone therapy supercharges immune response. I've watched patients become more efficient at identifying and eliminating threats, whether viruses, bacteria, or abnormal cells.

Fighting Infections and Viruses

Ozone therapy proves particularly effective against stubborn infections. During viral outbreaks, many patients with lingering symptoms found relief through ozone treatments. Typically, one or two low-dose sessions cleared symptoms that persisted for weeks or months.

The therapy works equally well against bacterial infections and chronic Lyme disease. The high oxygen environment created by ozone therapy becomes inhospitable to many disease-causing organisms, helping bodies eliminate them more effectively.

Reducing Inflammation

Chronic inflammation underlies countless health problems. It attacks joints, damages nerves, and accelerates aging. Ozone therapy addresses inflammation at its source by providing oxygen needed for proper cellular function and waste removal.

Arthritis and Joint Pain Relief

For patients struggling with arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or chronic joint pain, ozone therapy offers genuine relief. The inflammation causing joint stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility responds well to increased oxygenation. Many patients report significant improvements in range of motion and pain levels after consistent treatment.

Detoxification Benefits

We live in a toxic world. Heavy metals, environmental pollutants, and metabolic waste products accumulate over time. Ozone therapy supports natural detoxification processes by improving cellular function and helping organs like the liver and kidneys work more efficiently.

During EBOO treatments, patients actually see toxins being filtered from their blood. The combination of increased oxygen and enhanced circulation helps bodies eliminate waste products accumulated for years.

Improved Circulation and Athletic Recovery

Athletes have discovered ozone therapy as a legal, natural way to enhance performance and speed recovery. When you exercise intensely, you create micro-tears in muscle tissue. Bodies need adequate oxygen and nutrients to repair this damage and build stronger muscle.

Many athletes now incorporate regular ozone sessions into their training regimens. The enhanced circulation and oxygenation speed muscle recovery, reduce soreness, and help them train harder without risking injury or burnout. I personally do EBOO monthly just for wellness, and I love the feeling it provides.

Medical Conditions I've Successfully Treated

Ozone therapy has shown promise for a remarkably diverse array of health conditions in my practice.

Chronic Lyme Disease

Lyme disease can be notoriously difficult to treat, especially in chronic stages. Traditional antibiotics don't always eliminate the infection completely. I've helped many Lyme patients achieve significant improvement or complete recovery using ozone therapy. We've cleared many Lyme cases using just ozone treatment. The high oxygen environment makes it difficult for Lyme bacteria to survive while supporting immune function.

Mold Toxicity

Mold exposure causes persistent, life-altering symptoms. One remarkable case involved a 14-year-old Amish girl who could barely function due to severe mold toxicity. She was constantly exhausted, couldn't attend social gatherings, and missed important family events including Sunday church services, which bothered her most.

After starting with low-dose ozone therapy and transitioning to EBOO, her transformation was dramatic. Within a month to six weeks, she perked up considerably. Within two months, she attended gatherings again, including church on Sundays. Follow-up testing confirmed the mold toxicity had completely cleared. This remains one of my most memorable success stories.

Post-Viral Symptoms

Many people experience lingering symptoms after viral infections that persist for months. Breathing difficulties, fatigue, brain fog, and weakness severely impact quality of life. During viral outbreaks, we had lots of patients with lingering symptoms. I typically performed one or two low-dose treatments, which usually took care of the problems.

One gentleman could barely breathe without wheezing. His doctor put him on an inhaler. He came seeking anything that could help. After explaining ozone therapy, he said, "Hook me up." We started with three low-dose treatments. After the third one, he could breathe better and used the inhaler less.

We then started weekly high-dose EBOO. By the second session, he was walking independently without wheezing. He wasn't using the inhaler anymore. We did one more session, and he was ecstatic. He returned to normal and was really thankful for finding us and EBOO.

Neuropathy Treatment

Neuropathy occurs when nerves don't receive adequate oxygen and nutrients, causing them to deteriorate. This results in numbness, tingling, pain, and loss of function. I use EBOO and ozone with every neuropathy patient. It's in my protocol because ozone therapy addresses neuropathy at its root cause by dramatically increasing oxygen delivery to damaged nerves.

When you have neuropathy, your nerves are basically diminishing and dying. They lack proper oxygen or nutrients going to that nerve. To heal nerves, we need three components: nerve re-education, circulation, and getting rid of inflammation. Inflammation attacks joints and nerves. High-dose oxygen addresses all three factors. Combined with nerve re-education and inflammation reduction, ozone therapy forms a powerful protocol for nerve regeneration.

Cancer Support

While ozone therapy is not a standalone cancer treatment, many cancer patients have incorporated it into their overall care strategy. Cancer cells thrive in low-oxygen environments. By flooding the body with oxygen, ozone therapy creates conditions unfavorable for cancer cell growth.

I've had cancer patients who come in and seek treatment. Typically, these are patients in worst-case scenarios trying everything possible. They usually get scanned every three months. When they start treatment, I ask if they're getting scanned. Typically, they are, which allows us to see differences.

Many times, ozone therapy helps shrink tumors or cancer cells. I've seen reductions up to 50% when patients come in for treatment and then get their three-month scan. Cancer cells don't like oxygen. That's basically what we're doing with high-dose oxygen treatment.

Cardiovascular Health

Heart disease, high blood pressure, and poor circulation all benefit from improved oxygenation. I use ozone therapy with patients who have heart issues, whether high blood pressure or low blood pressure. Ozone therapy supports cardiovascular health by reducing inflammation in blood vessels, improving circulation, and helping the heart work more efficiently.

Who Can Benefit: My Patient Demographics

The beauty of ozone therapy lies in its versatility. It truly offers benefits for almost everyone I treat.

Athletes and Active Individuals

If you push your body physically, ozone therapy can help you recover faster, train harder, and perform better. The enhanced oxygen delivery supports muscle repair, reduces inflammation from intense training, and helps prevent overtraining syndrome. Many athletes schedule monthly EBOO sessions to maintain peak performance.

Chronic Disease Patients

For people dealing with serious health challenges like kidney disease, liver disease, autoimmune conditions, or chronic infections, ozone therapy provides support complementing traditional medical treatments. With EBOO, I actually use it more with chronic conditions. We've had kidney disease, liver disease, or pancreas disease patients. Sometimes cancer patients seek these treatments because they've read about them. We see many chronic conditions treated successfully.

Wellness and Anti-Aging Seekers

You don't need to be sick to benefit. Many people use it purely for wellness and anti-aging purposes. The therapy stimulates collagen production, supports cellular repair, and helps maintain youthful vitality. I have wellness patients and athletes who do it regularly. I do it once a month just for wellness. I don't have any problems, but I love the feeling. It takes about 90 minutes to two hours, but typically halfway through, you just perk up. You feel more energized with lots more energy, and usually, it lasts quite a bit afterward.

The therapy has been safely used on patients ranging from young children to my oldest patient currently receiving EBOO treatments at 96 years old. This wide age range demonstrates its safety and broad applicability. We have patients from kids to 96-year-olds, so all ages really benefit.

Safety Profile: Eight Years Without Incidents

As with any medical treatment, understanding safety considerations is crucial.

My Safety Record

When administered properly by trained professionals, ozone therapy has an excellent safety record. We've done it for the last eight years with no problems whatsoever. I've never had any issues. It's basically knowing how to do them properly.

Important Ozone Safety Facts

One critical safety note: ozone should never be inhaled. I've heard people say ozone is toxic and not good if you inhale it. That's true. If you inhale it, it will damage the lungs. We don't have patients inhale it. I put it through the bloodstream where blood absorbs that oxygen and circulates through the body. There's nothing inhaled, so it is safe.

Potential Side Effects and How I Prevent Them

The only side effect that might occur (but we've never had any of it, and I'll tell you why) is detox. You might detox if someone goes into just doing the high-dose right away. That's why we don't do that.

In our clinic, the protocol requires you to do three low-dose ozones before doing a high-dose. That's so we can avoid that detox. Detox signs are kind of like getting the flu. You might have a temperature. Your body is basically overloaded with oxygen trying to heal something. That's why you might get fever, chills, the typical symptoms of detox. But it is safe.

This gradual approach allows bodies to adjust to increased oxygenation without overwhelming detoxification systems.

What Patients Experience During Treatment

Knowing what happens during treatment helps ease concerns about trying ozone therapy.

Low-Dose Session Experience

Low-dose ozone therapy is remarkably straightforward. Patients sit in comfortable reclining chairs, similar to getting regular IV therapy. I draw a small amount of blood, mix it with ozone, then slowly drip it back into the vein. The whole process takes 20 to 30 minutes. Most people find it quite relaxing. They might read, listen to music, or simply rest during treatment.

EBOO Session Experience

EBOO requires more time commitment. Patients should plan for 90 minutes to two hours. I place IVs in both arms, and patients remain seated comfortably while the machine does its work. Many report a noticeable energy boost about halfway through the session. Despite the longer duration, most patients find the experience pleasant and results well worth the time investment.

Treatment Frequency Recommendations

How often patients need treatment depends entirely on individual situations. For general wellness, monthly sessions often suffice. We have patients that come in and do it once a week, once every two weeks, or once a month. That's what I recommend. I do it monthly, which is why I recommend it for everybody else. We don't introduce anything that I wouldn't have tried. It's done just for wellness sake, but it's very beneficial for anybody and everybody.

People dealing with acute issues might start with weekly treatments. Those with chronic conditions might need treatments every two weeks initially, then taper to monthly maintenance sessions.

Results timelines vary by individual. Some people feel dramatically better after a single session. Others need seven to ten low-dose treatments before experiencing significant improvement. High-dose EBOO therapy typically produces noticeable results within the first or second session.

How many sessions does someone need before seeing results? That's a very hard question to answer. It depends on each person and each body, how it absorbs that oxygen. If you're doing strictly low-dose, it could be after seven to ten treatments. If you're doing high-dose, it's typically within that first or second treatment that you'll see results. But everyone is different. If you're really, really sick, then yeah, it's going to take longer. If you're not, then it doesn't take as long, typically.

Real Success Stories from My Practice

Nothing illustrates ozone therapy's potential better than real patient experiences I've witnessed.

Cancer Patient Outcomes

Cancer patients often seek ozone therapy after exhausting conventional options. These are typically people facing serious prognoses who want to try every possible avenue. Many undergo regular scans every three months, providing objective data on treatment effectiveness.

Several cancer patients have experienced significant tumor reduction (in some cases up to 50% shrinkage) while incorporating ozone therapy into their treatment plans. While individual results vary, the therapy offers hope and tangible benefits for many facing this challenging diagnosis.

The Amish Girl with Mold Toxicity

I had this Amish girl, 14 at the time she came in. Really bad mold toxicity. She was really tired all the time, couldn't function, couldn't be in gatherings or anything like that. Always sleeping. Didn't feel the best.

She came and started doing the low-dose ozone, and then we switched her up to EBOO. I would say within a month, month and a half, she perked up. Within two months, she was able to get to gatherings again. Her biggest thing was going to church on Sunday because it was a huge gathering with everybody, and she couldn't do that before. Now she can.

When she went and got tested to see if she still has mold, it was all gone. There are lots of stories like that, especially with Lyme disease as well, and other success stories.

Post-Viral Respiratory Recovery

Another story we have is during viral outbreaks. I had this gentleman who could barely breathe, was wheezing. They put him on an inhaler. He came seeking anything that he could do. We told him about the ozone. He said, "Hook me up."

We started with the three low-dose treatments. After really the third one, he was able to breathe. He did use the inhaler less. We started doing the high-dose after that on a weekly basis in the beginning when someone has it like that.

By the second one, he was actually walking by himself, not wheezing. He wasn't using the inhaler anymore. We did one more session, and really, he was ecstatic. He was back to normal. He was really thankful for finding about us and EBOO.

Ozone Therapy Compared to Traditional IV Therapy

Patients often ask how ozone therapy differs from vitamin IV therapy. Actually, these treatments complement each other beautifully. Many of our patients receive them together during the same visit. We use them hand in hand.

The typical approach involves administering ozone therapy first to supercharge blood with oxygen. Then vitamin IV therapy follows, infusing the body with essential nutrients. Many times, we'll have patients that come in and do both at the same time. We'll do the ozone first to put oxygen in their blood, and then we'll infuse them with vitamins. They're both beneficial.

While vitamin IV therapy delivers specific nutrients your body needs, ozone therapy focuses on optimizing your body's ability to use oxygen for healing and energy production. They work through different mechanisms but share the common goal of supporting optimal health.

Different Ways to Administer Ozone

Patients often ask if there are different ways to use ozone. Yes, there are multiple ways.

You can ozonate water and drink it, which some people do at home. You can do rectal ozone. You could do ear ozone, which we actually do at the clinic. We use ear ozone for headaches, chronic sinus issues, just anything head-related.

We've used it for patients who recently came in with tongue sores and stuff like that. We had them do the ozone water, swish it, and drink it. That actually cleared it up for them pretty quick. So there are lots of benefits of ozone.

We also do it for infections. We have many diabetic patients that come in with sores that don't heal. We can do a bag. Say they've got it on their hand, we can put a bag, diffuse ozone in there, and actually, that starts to heal that wound. So wounds that aren't healing or closing up, we can use ozone with that. There are lots of different ways of using ozone. These are just a few ways that we use in the clinic except for the rectal one. We don't use that. We do the IV, which is more beneficial.

Which Administration Method Works Best?

A question that just popped up after discussing that is, is it beneficial to do it one way than the other, or are they all the same? Yes, it comes back to that absorption rate. Everything goes back to the blood.

The best absorption rate would be the IV ozone. It wouldn't be drinking because that's going through your digestive system, breaking a lot of it down. The rectal? Yes, you are absorbing a little bit more. But yeah, the best way will be the IV.

My Personal Experience and Recommendation

If you have not done ozone IV, I would highly recommend trying it out, especially the low-dose. You can start with that. But there are lots of benefits of ozone IV. Just like I said, the brighter your blood is, the more oxygenated it is, and that's where all the benefits come in.

A lot of times, before I started ozone, my blood was that darkish reddish color. You draw my blood right now, it's actually super bright red, and that's because I do that EBOO every month. So doing ozone IV is very beneficial.

Treatment Protocols I Follow

Most clinics recommend starting with low-dose ozone therapy before progressing to high-dose EBOO. This gradual approach allows your body to adapt and minimizes potential detox reactions. Be prepared to commit to a series of treatments rather than expecting immediate results from a single session.

Understanding EBOO Therapy

Is EBOO voodoo, and why do you need it? No. EBOO stands for Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation. It's basically putting high-dose oxygen in your blood.

The best way to explain it is think of it as doping. Remember Lance Armstrong used to dope? It's kind of like doping. You're getting high doses of oxygen so that your body can perform and heal any diseases, viruses, bacteria in your blood, in your system, organs, anything.

How Ozone Helps Specific Conditions

Neuropathy

How does EBOO or ozone help with neuropathy? We use EBOO and ozone with every neuropathy patient. It is in my protocol that we use ozone IV to help heal the nerves.

Again, we want to put high-dose oxygen in the body because when you have neuropathy, your nerves are basically diminishing. They don't have the proper oxygen or nutrients going to that nerve, and that's why it's diminishing. It's dying.

In order to heal it, we need (when I talked about neuropathy) the three components: we need nerve re-education, circulation, and getting rid of inflammation. Inflammation likes the joints and attacks the nerves. So how do we get rid of inflammation? Well, high-dose oxygen. Circulation? High-dose oxygen. Get the nerves to function again? Well, you need the oxygen nutrients in order for it to fire again. So oxygen, oxygen, oxygen. EBOO, high-dose, low-dose ozone.

Muscle and Joint Pain

What does EBOO or low-dose ozone do for muscle pain or muscle conditions or joint pain? Well, again, that comes back to inflammation. You've got built-up inflammation in the muscles or in the joint. We need to get rid of it. The body isn't coping, so that's why it's not getting rid of that inflammation.

What we need is high-dose oxygen. That's what we're doing with ozone IV or EBOO, which is high-dose ozone. Basically, it goes into the bloodstream. It starts attaching to the worst areas in the body which need oxygen, and that way starts what we call back in biology class the Krebs cycle, which is the energy factor to start the cells working again and start that healing process in those cells.

Conclusion: Eight Years of Clinical Success

Ozone therapy represents an exciting frontier in regenerative medicine and wellness care. By harnessing the healing power of supercharged oxygen, this treatment offers benefits for everything from chronic disease management to athletic performance enhancement and general wellness support.

The therapy's versatility remains remarkable. Whether you're dealing with stubborn infections, chronic pain, cardiovascular issues, or simply want to optimize your health and slow the aging process, ozone therapy might offer the support your body needs to heal itself more effectively.

Through eight years of clinical practice, I've watched patient success stories multiply. From cancer patients experiencing tumor shrinkage to athletes recovering faster to people with chronic Lyme disease finally finding relief, ozone therapy makes a real difference in people's lives.

The safety profile, when treatments are administered properly, is excellent. The visual transformation of blood from dark to bright red provides immediate, tangible evidence that something beneficial is happening. Perhaps most importantly, the treatment supports your body's own healing mechanisms rather than introducing foreign substances or suppressing symptoms.

If conventional treatments haven't given you the results you're seeking, or if you're simply interested in optimizing your health and vitality, ozone therapy deserves serious consideration. The combination of solid science, clinical experience, and real patient success stories suggests this innovative treatment will continue growing in popularity as more people discover its remarkable benefits.
